Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to all of your SMP Questions from Brisbane's busiest Scalp Micropigmentation provider: The Replique Clinic.
What is SMP?
Scalp Micropigmentation is the newest, non surgical, hair replication technique available. Carefully chosen inks are used to replicate the hair follicles on your head to give the appearance of a natural hairline, a closely shaved head or a thicker, fuller head of hair. SMP is changing the lives of those who suffer from any type of hair loss. It is also used to cover up scars from Hair Transplants.
Who is a suitable candidate for a Scalp Tattoo?
Hair Pigmentation can be the solution for any stage of hair loss in men or women of any age, with any skin type or skin colour.
Partial or Completely Bald
Thousands of replicated hair follicles will give the partial or completely bald head a natural hairline and the appearance of a closely shaved scalp.
A permanent camouflage is created by the tattooed tiny replicated hair follicles that soften the contrast between the visible scalp and the thinning hair to create a thicker, fuller looking head of hair.
Female Pattern Hair Loss
Women can have thinning or advanced hair loss due to medication, change in hormones, stress or as a result of a medical procedure. Many women opt for wigs or hair coverings, while others have successfully camouflaged their hair loss with Scalp Micropigmentation to give the appearance of thicker hair, especially in the hairline area.
Alopecia and Scarring
A hair tattoo for baldness can give suffers of alopecia or hair transplant scarring piece of mind by quickly camouflaging bald patches and scars on the scalp
How long will it last?
Scalp Micropigmenation is a permanent hair loss remedy where pigment is layered onto the scalp to create the appearance of density. It will last a five to ten years however a touch up session will be required in that time. Factors such as your lifestyle, immune function and the look you desire will determine at what stage or how often maintenance is required. Touch Ups are quick and easy and they'll keep you looking your best.
How much does it cost?
How much to give back the appearance for a full head of hair?
That lasts five to ten years?
We'd say it's priceless, but actually it generally costs between $2800 and $5000 depending on the level of hair loss and density required.
Remember, this is a treatment that will last for a very long time so do it once, and do it properly. Don't settle for untrained and inexperienced providers who will use substandard or incorrect pigment, or who will rush the procedure then charge you for additional sessions. Why is it becoming a popular hair replacement option?
Scalp Micropigmentation will thankfully cost less than many alternatives. There are no ongoing costs like there are with hair replacement systems or hair growth products such as drugs & creams. You also aren't reliant of the continued use of medicine and lotions to maintain your current level of hair. The cost of Scalp Micropigmentation is very reasonable compared to the cost of hair transplants, and you won't have to cross your fingers and wait and see if the hair transplant is actually successful, nor are you left with scars. There are no claims of hair loss cures or magical hair regrowth. A scalp tattoo is a tangible hair loss treatment. You will see immediate results! Is it a Tattoo?
Thousands of tiny replicated hair follicles are tattooed onto the scalp as hair replacement, however hairline tattoos are not a usual tattoo, nor should it be done by a tattooist. Specialised equipment, training and certification is required to perform this procedure. For the best results make sure your using an accredited Scalp Pigmentation practitioner.
How long does it take?
When you compare Scalp Micropigmentation to alternative hair loss treatments, it is a quick hair loss solution. Up to three half day sessions are required to achieve the best results. Head Tattoo Pigment is applied to the full treatment area in the first session. Then the second session adds density and the third session is used for touch ups to ensure that you are completely satisfied with the coverage.

Unsightly, disheartening strip, FUE, plug and cobblestone scars can all be masked to some extent with SMP.
Can I get it done at a normal tattoo parlour?
Noooooooo. We see horror stories all the time of guys who want to get Scalp Micropigmentation done at their local tattoo parlour. SMP is done with different pigments to normal body art, our pigment doesn't turn blue and green, which unfortunately is often the case with tattoo artists who use mineral based pigment on the scalp. They also haven't been trained to create a subtle and natural looking hairline, or to blend with your existing hair. You are best to have a consultation with an industry expert who can discuss your option and stick to getting body art from traditional tattoo artists.
Can it hide scarring?
Yes. Luckily Scalp Micropigmentation is very effective on scarring because there is no such thing as a scar free hair transplant. Outdated hair transplants such as flaps, plugs or scalp reductions leave unsightly scars taht are very hard to cover up without professional help. Obvious strip, FUE, plug and cobblestone scars can all be masked to some extent with a hair tattoo that will disguise the bright whiteness of the scar area.
Will it make my hair look thicker?
Yes. To thicken the look of thinning hair, we apply carefully selected pigment onto the scalp between the existing hair, which gives the appearance of a fuller thicker head of hair.
Does it look real?
Yes it does, in fact we have one client in our Brisbane clinic who only had Scalp Micropigmentation on his temples to blend with a hair piece and the client's barber couldnt tell that the tiny follicles were Scalp Micropigmentation.
Im uncertain if this is the right Hair Replacement Service for me, how does it compare to other Hair Loss Solutions?
If you want a 100% guaranteed hair replacement solution, a solution that is going to take away the appearance of thinning and balding hair then there are only a few options, and Scalp Micropigmentation is at the top of the list. Hair transplants are wonderful in theory, BUT they are only moving hair from one part of the scalp to another, they aren't increasing how much hair you have on your scalp. Grafted hair systems are a brilliant way to get a full head of hair but there is some maintenance and they need to be replaced a few times a year. Scalp Micropigmentation is immediate, it's long lasting, it's affordable and it can be done at your pace. Want the appearance of a full head of hair quickly? Then book an express treatment where we fast track the treatment so it is over and done with in a few days. Want to have the hair gradually appear back on the scalp as though it were slowly growing back? Book the treatments so they are one week apart, over three weeks you will have the appearance of a full head of hair that looks like it slowly has grown back without the enormous cost of a hair transplant.
Scalp Micropigmentation is durable, low fuss and certainly earns the position of the World's fastest growing hair replacement solution.
Is it painful?
We all have different pain thresholds, but most people receiving SMP liken it to a small sting and say it is an inconsequential pain. We use a very fine needle and only enter 0.5mm into the skin. Traditional tattooing use a thicker needle and penetrate far deeper into the skin. Many people actually fall asleep when receiving SMP. It can become painful if you have a treatment several days after your first treatment. We recommend waiting one week between treatments so the scalp can heal and pain will once again be minimal.
Why choose Replique Clinic for my Hair Loss Solution?
Replique Clinic is Brisbane's premier Scalp Micropigmentation centre. We perform many other treatments and services, such as skin conditioning and hair grafted hair systems, but ultimately Scalp Micropigmentation is our most popular treatment. Scott Hickman, founder of Replique, performs hundreds of Scalp Micropigmentation treatments each year and has also had the treatment himself. Scott and the team are dedicated to providing a discrete and professional service for all clients. We pride ourselves on not being a hair transplant clinic and are pleased to boast of the huge number of referrals we get from existing clients. We strive to be innovative with our marketing and market education, in fact we've developed arguably the World's first Scalp Micropigmentation calculator, where you can customise a live quote based on your own hair loss and desired outlook.
Can I book an appointment to get Scalp Micropigmentation or do I need a consultation first?
Most of the time we like to have a consultation so we can look at the clients complexion, discuss any skin conditions and concerns and then book the Scalp Micropigmentation sessions. But we have many clients, who don't have time to come for a consultation, instead they will text their photos to the clinic and we have a phone or email consultation and then book in the sessions after that.
